The Tarot comprises a pack of cards divided into Major and Minor arcana. Arcana means secrets so we have Major and Minor secrets of the tarot.
Is the tarot magical? - No - Its a pack of cards! The magic comes in understanding them and that comes directly from you. Anyone can learn to read the tarot - the depth of understanding depends on the person, how much time and effort they are willing to put into learning the system of the tarot.
So how are we meant to learn the tarot? From studying the basics of symbolism to the meaning of numerology and astrology and the system of the kabbalistic tree of life.
Three courses to choose from
There are three courses available which you may join either singly or together. You can see the details of each course in the boxes below.
Symbols
The basic meaning of any card can be gained from the symbols contained within the cards. We all understand what a symbol is. They are used everywhere within our normal day to day lives. They are used in our homes, our workplaces and out on the street. A stop sign for instance tells us not to do something. A green light tells us it's OK to proceed. Almost everyone associates a dove as a sign of peace.
Body Language
Each character in the tarot is displaying a form of body language. We need no teaching about body language as from early childhood we learn to recognise body language in others. If someone is dancing around the house whilst doing the housework we know they are happy and if they have their backs turned to us we know they don't wish to communicate.
Weather patterns and landscape
Again, we all know that weather patterns are easy to spot. A bright blue sky means a warm sunny day, whilst clouds in the sky mean either cold or impending rain. The weather in a tarot card helps us to see the prevailing mood of the card. We all know that a stark mountain is going to be difficult to climb and a rose garden is somewhere to relax in.
Colour
Everyone associates colour with moods, feelings and actions. The colours within the tarot cards allow us to further define the overall mood or action taking place within a card.
The Beginners Course
This course covers all of the above - it is a place for you to start to learn the tarot without getting into the involved systems of numerology, astrology and kaballah. You can read the tarot with just this knowledge of symbolism (a list of the meanings of symbols is given in your resources section), body language, weather patterns and colour. The trick is to learn to integrate the meanings of the symbols with the body language, colours and weather or landscape within the card.
Research (Advanced) Course
For those who wish to go deeper into their studies we have the research (or advanced course). This course involves research in your own time using books and the internet and of course the help files available.
Astrology
Everyone knows their own birth sign and that of their partners or children. Very few people bother to look any further than this into astrology and especially in relation to the tarot. In the tarot each sign and planet is associated with a card - understanding the basics of each sign and planet and in the minor arcana a combination of two further helps you to understand the meaning of the card.
Numerology
Unlike astrology, this is not something many people bother to take an interest in. But numbers DO have meaning and each card is associated with a number.
The Kabbalah
The Kabbalistic Tree of Life is also associated with the tarot, astrology and numerology and reinforces the study of the above associations with tarot
As your study progresses you will see that each of the above systems slot nicely into place with each other - they synchronise and reinforce your learning of the other systems.
The reading (professional) course
You're asking yourself why, with all the study and learning you have done so far, with all the knowledge you now have you should bother with a reading course. Hey, you know what the card means and you can explain it to anyone you are reading for, right?
That may be, but there is a reason this course is called a professional course. It shows you how to handle the people you are reading for, how to put the information across to your client, friend or loved one without causing harm or undue stress. People want readings because they need help and this course shows you the difference between explaining the card and helping your client.
How the course is laid out
Each course contains four/five assignments for a single card (see the information in the course boxes below) which you will need to work through before moving onto the next card.
We prefer that you work on all the assignments for one card at a time so that you cover all its aspects before moving on to the next card.
Rider-Waite Deck - v - Other Decks
Please note that the course uses the Rider-Waite deck. I have had many enquiries over the past few years about doing the course with other decks. All the symbolism within the course refers to the Rider-Waite deck and hence your assignments must use that deck.
However, several students also use other decks alongside the Rider-Waite and submit both their work on the Rider-Waite deck and the other decks they are using. This is very useful for the student who wishes to compare their work with other decks. Please note that assignments on other decks will not be graded and you must state which deck your work refers to.
If you do submit work on other decks note that the minimum letter/character requirement applies to the work on the Rider-Waite deck.
